Ensuring Road Safety with DOT Physicals

DOT Physicals at Afterhours Urgent Care Center

For those aiming to be certified Department of Transportation (DOT) drivers, undergoing a DOT Physical is a crucial step. At Afterhours Urgent Care Center, we understand the importance of these physicals in ensuring both your safety and the safety of others on the road.

About one quarter (25.7%) of adults have a seasonal allergy, 7.3% have eczema, and 6.2% have a food allergy.
Who Needs a DOT Physical?

DOT physicals are mandatory for professional drivers to ensure they can safely operate commercial vehicles. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), you’ll need a DOT physical if you are:

  • Driving a vehicle with a gross weight of 10,001 lbs. or more.
  • Transporting 9-15 passengers for compensation.
  • Transporting 16 or more passengers.
  • Transporting hazardous materials requiring placarding.
  • State-specific regulations may also apply for intrastate drivers.

Where to Get a DOT Physical? Only FMCSA-certified medical providers can conduct DOT physicals. These providers have undergone specific training and are registered with the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME).

When is Renewal Required? A DOT physical certification can last up to 24 months. However, if a medical condition requires monitoring, certification could be for a shorter period. Conditions like hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, or sleep disorders may warrant more frequent evaluations.

What to Expect During Your DOT Physical?

  1. Medical History Review:
Comprehensive assessment of your health history, including surgeries, medications, and existing conditions.
  2. Vitals and Physical Examination:
Includes checking pulse, height, weight, and blood pressure. Urinalysis is also conducted to detect underlying medical issues.
  3. Vision Testing:
Ensuring at least 20/40 vision acuity in each eye, with or without correction, and adequate field of vision.
  4. Comprehensive Physical Assessment:
Examining overall physical appearance and specific body systems.
  5. Drug Screening:
While not part of the physical exam, DOT requires drug screening, often conducted alongside the physical.

Preparing for Your DOT Physical

  • Bring a valid driver’s license and any necessary employer forms.
  • List current medications and medical history, including surgeries and conditions.
