Urinary tract infections are one of the most common bacterial infections worldwide. Women are more prone to UTIs than men, with approximately 50-60% of women experiencing at least one UTI during their lifetime.
Understanding UTIs: Causes and Symptoms

A UTI occurs when bacteria enter parts of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Commonly resulting from E. coli bacteria, UTIs can affect anyone but are more prevalent in women due to anatomical differences. Risk factors include incontinence, catheter use, menopause, and certain forms of birth control.

Typical Symptoms of a UTI:

  • Strong, persistent urge to urinate
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Frequent, small amounts of urine
  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
  • Pelvic pain in women
  • Symptoms of kidney infection in severe cases, such as back pain, fever, and nausea
Diagnosing UTIs: Urinalysis and Culture

To diagnose a UTI, you will provide a urine sample that our medical team will analyze. This urinalysis can detect signs of infection, including visual changes like cloudiness and alterations in pH levels. It can also reveal more precise indicators such as bacterial byproducts and the presence of white blood cells.

To pinpoint the specific bacteria responsible for the infection, your healthcare provider may recommend a urine culture. In this process, your urine sample will be sent to an external laboratory. Apart from identifying the bacteria causing the infection, this test also determines which antibiotics are effective in eradicating the bacteria, ensuring accurate and targeted treatment.

Treating UTIs with Targeted Antibiotics

UTIs are bacterial infections typically treated with antibiotics. It’s essential to start treatment early to prevent complications like recurrent infections, kidney damage, or sepsis. Our medical team will prescribe the appropriate antibiotics, often based on empiric evidence, and adjust as needed based on culture results.

Prevention Strategies for UTIs

To lower your risk of future UTIs:

  • Stay hydrated to flush bacteria from your urinary tract.
  • Urinate regularly, especially before and after sexual activity.
  • Practice proper hygiene, wiping from front to back.
  • Consider non-irritating birth control alternatives if prone to UTIs.
  • Try cranberry juice or supplements, which might prevent bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract.
  • Avoid scented hygiene products that can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria.
